Roberts Gardiner Architects have delivered a new two-storey teaching block at Albany Senior High School, on behalf of the WA Department of Education. The project provides contemporary, flexible learning environments while responding sensitively to the school’s heritage-listed context.
The building is designed to support modern pedagogical approaches, with classrooms arranged to maximise natural light, connectivity, and passive supervision. A restrained palette of durable materials complements the existing heritage fabric while clearly expressing the building as a contemporary addition to the campus.
Inclusive access was a key driver of the design to significantly improve campus-wide accessibility, enabling independent and safe movement for students, staff, and visitors of all abilities.
Embedded sustainability strategies—including passive design, orientation, shading, and material durability—reduce environmental impact and long-term operational costs. The project strengthens the school’s identity as a valued community asset, delivering enduring educational infrastructure for future generations.
