Media summary

The redevelopment of the heritage listed GPO and surrounds reinvigorates one of Adelaide’s most historically important precincts. What was once Australia’s telecommunications connection with the world has been reshaped into a new hospitality and commercial precinct.

The redevelopment breathes new life into the significant heritage building, creates and completes a permeable, inviting precinct; and introduces a restrained, elegant and respectful contemporary building to complement the original GPO

Reuse of the grand heritage spaces coupled with the new tower cantilevered above accommodates the 285 guest-room Adelaide Marriott Hotel. The restrained, elegant façade of the tower is deliberately set back to allow the historic clock tower to hold its presence as a landmark at the corner of Victoria Square.

The project provides key landscaped connections through the site along both axes. Neighbouring buildings and precincts are linked into the central plaza space that flows into the public spaces of the hotel.

The redevelopment of Adelaide’s heritage-listed General Post Office revitalises this historically significant precinct, transforming it into a vibrant hub for hospitality and commerce. The project introduces a refined, elegantly proportioned tower that complements the carefully preserved heritage fabric. With meticulous detailing, inclusive laneways, and a strong architectural response, the design not only honours Adelaide’s history but also contributes meaningfully to its urban future.
