NIGHT TALK | DARK SKY TASMANIA

LANDON BANNISTER | PRESIDENT OF DARK SKY TASMANIA

Tasmania is home to some of the largest swaths of pristine dark skies in the world, but this precious natural resource is under threat from light pollution. The increasingly widespread use of artificial light outdoors not only impairs our view of the universe, but also adversely affects our sleep, our mood, our environment — and the many nocturnal species that inhabit it.
A celebration of the fragile beauty of the cosmos — embracing our long winter nights, taking the time to gaze skyward, and gathering around the warm glow of open fires with a whisky or mulled cider. It’s also an opportunity to learn more about the Dark Sky movement and the simple steps we can take to preserve one of Tasmania’s most prized and imperilled resources.

EVENING ENTERTAINMENT

Sit back and relax around the camp fire or have a little boogie under the night sky. Enjoy the evening entertainments of Tasmanian artistic duo – Jed Appleton and Seth Henderson.

OPEN TIMES: 12PM – 1.30PM

BICHENO HOUSE | ANCHER ARCHITECTURE OFFICE

An extension to a 1930’s fisherman’s cottage in Bicheno on Tasmania’s East Coast.

The original weatherboard home was originally crafted to be cosy and confined, seemingly impervious to the unique visa overlooking Waubs Bay.

Our design sought to celebrate the view across Waubs Bay, whilst retaining the cottage’s original charm. Working within a modest budget, we were presented with a number of unusual challenges, such as penguin proofing the exterior to preserve the integrity of the local colony and working in a regional town through Tasmanian border closures.

The form of the addition seeks to continue the tradition of shed architecture found up and down the east coast of Tasmania. The simple gable form is joined to the original shack via a low glazed link to clearly delineate between old and new. The flexible floor plan allows for inter-generational holidays.

OPEN TIMES: 1.30PM – 3PM

DOLPHIN SANDS STUDIO | MATT WILLIAMS ARCHITECTS

Sitting lightly amongst the dunes, Dolphin Sands Studio is a place for calm and respite; and a reconnection with nature.

Originally conceived as a viewfinder, the Studio focusses the occupants on the view across Great Oyster Bay, to the Freycinet Peninsula.

The other guiding idea was that of a solid tent – a structure that provided the shelter required on such an exposed site, while maintaining the immediacy of the surrounding and greater landscape.

The very limited, richly-textured palette creates a building that is easily read, so it readily drops into the background, while subconsciously enriching the overall experience.

Spring Bay Mill Quarters | Gilby + Brewin Architecture | Photographer: Gilby Brewin

GUIDED SITE TOUR: 4PM – 5PM

SPRING BAY MILL | GILBY + BREWIN ARCHITECTURE

The building takes cues from simple workers’ or shearers’ quarters where bedrooms are traditionally arranged along a shared corridor or veranda, with common areas for cooking, eating and socialising.

The design seeks to avoid the generic nature of hotels and the indulgence of luxury accommodation and instead aims to support a visceral experience of this unique regenerating post-industrial site and the surrounding landscape.

Join us for a special guided tour of Spring Bay Mill with Ross Brewin and Anna Gilby.

OPEN TIMES: 12PM – 1PM

SPRING BEACH GETAWAY | PRESTON LANE

Located at Spring Beach on Tasmania’s East Coast, the house is shared between two families providing a gathering place for escape relaxation in the sun and also a place to enjoy the joys of growing families and the company of friends. The concept for the project evolved from a pragmatic response to the site, a desire to capture specific views both to and from the house and from the challenge of accommodating two families and their needs within a modest footprint and budget. A main living pavilion, offset from the private bedroom pavilion, provides the focal point of the house, a place to gather, relax and enjoy the sun.

Bluff House – Spring Beach | Preston Lane | Photographer: Adam Gibson

OPEN TIMES: 1PM – 2PM

BLUFF HOUSE – SPRING BEACH | PRESTON LANE

Bluff Road House sits comfortably in the corner of a cul-der-sac in the rural beach side suburb of Spring Beach on the East Coast of Tasmania.

The home was to be without pretention and sit quietly in its context which consists of an eclectic mix of building types.

The formal arrangement of the home consists of two gabled pavilions, one housing the Living spaces (to the East), and the other the Carport which is tucked away towards the rear of the property.

The gabled ends address the street, referencing that of a local shed and providing a sense of familiarity for passers by enabling the new home to sit comfortably into its surrounds.

The pavilions are connected by a covered walkway which aligns with the soffit of the carport and sets up a datum for the apertures within the home and providing an aesthetic link between the two.
