This multi-purpose community facility provides all-access toilets, showers and change rooms for users of Kingston Beach, as well as storage and support facilities for the local Surf Life Saving Club. The buildings are straight-forward and robust, sitting on a plinth and pushed to the southern boundary to provide an active, open and sunny forecourt, with hand basins and showers placed under a timber shade structure. Pedestrian and vehicle movements are separated, with bicycle racks available for both public and surf club use. A pre-cast concrete base provides a continuous datum, with open timber slats providing security and allowing natural light and ventilation above the cubicles. Rainwater is collected in a common water tank, with a rain garden slowing down filtration of overflow through the sandy ground. An existing mature eucalypt has been retained to extend the public realm into the site, with seating provided in shady areas beneath the tree.

Client perspective:
How does the design benefit the way you live/work/play/operate/educate/other?

“The design has very effectively delivered a complementary blend of functionality and place making, within a modern facility desired to nestle unobtrusively within its adjacent heritage precinct residential neighbourhood. The elements of siting, scale, profile and material selection have been craftily combined within the project to outwardly present the quintessential elements of a coastal seaside structure to the front, uniquely capture and frame the mountain ranges to the rear, and provide a multi-functional, low maintenance and environmentally considerate facility for users and visitors to experience and enjoy in between.”
