Residential Architecture | Multiple Housing
The aim of the project was to reinvigorate the historic Bruce Hall Residence, to reassert its signigcance as the heart of ANU campus life. To engage the existing community, student input in the design process was adopted to recreate a collegiate environment around a traditional courtyard accommodation model. Ultimately the building aspired to foster student life in two independent colleges which face each other across the breadth of University Ave. The use of interwoven social spaces located through a vertical village encourage a sense of community. These double height zones connect students and support the communal and social aspects of college life. The social engagement embedded in the program builds on the ethos of the Tuckwell foundation.

Client perspective:
How does the design benefit the way you live/work/play/operate/educate/other?
I am absolutely stunned and thrilled… stunned with just how beautiful the whole building is and the warm feeling within the building and the natural light everywhere… but most importantly I think it’s got a very homely feel to it. One of the first things we wanted to do was recreate as faithfully as possible the dining hall, it’s a modern interpretation of it, but as people walk into it, they can recognize, this is definitely Bruce Hall.
