The NT Chapter President, Miriam Wallace and Chapter Council members would like to express their condolences to Richard’s family after his battle with cancer.

Born in Perth and schooled at Knox Grammar School in Sydney, Layton graduated in Science at UNSW before joining CSR to work in their new Building Materials Division. He pursued a twenty-five-year career in production and general management with CSR, in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, before embarking on a new stage which saw him enrolling in architecture at The University of Adelaide. He graduated in 1991 after completing his Honours thesis – “The Effect of Air Flow on Thermal Comfort in the Tropics,” which led him to the Northern Territory.

Richard served two terms as the NT Chapter President of the NT Chapter from 2010 – 2014. He was a member of the Institute for over 25 years.

“Richard worked with Troppo Architects in the 1990s, where he worked on many indigenous community projects and enjoyed all that went with those projects. He was also the contract administrator for the prestigious Bowali visitor centre.” – Jo Rees, Ajar Architects.

“Richard did a lot of work in the very remote areas all through the Territory. The People of Galiwinku and Ramingining and many other places also would be very appreciative of the great efforts (over and above) that he did for them and others. He was always patient and generous with his time and thoughts about architecture and life.” – Jenny Culgan, GHD
