The Australian Institute of Architects Fellowships are given to members who have demonstrated a significant contribution to the architecture profession beyond architecture practice. It is our pleasure to announce that Misho Vasiljevich has been named a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects.
Misho completed a Bachelor of Architecture in 1994 at UTS and registered as an architect in 1998. His early work included residential and commercial projects in and around Sydney between 1995-2008. Leading into the Sydney Olympic Games, Misho and the team at Misho + Associates was part of the design team developing the masterplan for the retail component of the Sydney Airport International Terminal. In 1999, his firm won a design competition to expand the Sydney aquarium, called Sydney Wildlife World.
This early exposure and success working with complex public projects, multiple stakeholders and authorities, lead to his involvement with several nationally significant tourism and public infrastructure projects, including involvement with the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, The Rocks, The Waterfront Restaurant and Bambu Restaurant, and the Sydney Passenger Terminal.
In 2005, Misho relocated from Sydney to Hobart and downsized from 35 staff to working remotely. Misho still works collaboratively and remotely with a team of five,
each located in a different parts of the country.
Whilst undertaking increasingly complex and diverse projects, Misho’s practice continued to complete residential work in and around Sydney along with multi-residential projects further afield in South Australia with a strong sustainbility focus.
Misho has a strong reputation with airport and infrastructure projects, and in 2009, he received a commission to undertake a 20-year masterplan for the Hobart International Airport, and ongoing involvement in its redevelopment, alongside other firms.
While in Tasmania, he continues to collaborate on large scale tourism projects, including the new Sydney Zoo with Aspects Studios. Locally, the practice has completed a variety of projects including the multi-award-winning Iron Creek Bay Farm Stay – a sustainable farm stay accommodation at Sorell, and the Burns Residence in Premaydena (shortlisted in the World Architecture Festival 2015).
Outside his own practice, Misho has demonstrated a particular commitment to teaching and mentoring. He lectured and tutored in architecture and interior design at UTS between 1995-2006, as well as the BEES Projects-NSW program in primary and secondary schools. Misho was involved with University of Sydney and UNSW mentoring program and has contributed to the Institute’s PALS program both locally and now nationally.
Misho is an International Associate Member of the American Institute of Architects, and a member of the U.S. Green Building Council. Misho has been an Institute member since 1992. He has been an active member of the Tasmanian Chapter, volunteering to assist with numerous Institute activities and most notably serving on the Tasmanian Practice Committee since 2016, and was chair between 2018- 2021.
Congratulations, Misho.
