The Rockbank Inn site comprises three ruinous bluestone structures, believed to be a former hotel, store and stable, of historical significance for their association with diggers travelling to the Ballarat goldfields.Â
After a period of inactivity, post a c1960s fire which destroyed the Inn, a comprehensive conservation analysis was led by Purcell with an options study for their conservation and remediation. The options included considerations of structural safety, public access and long-term sustainability, while preserving archaeological material and, prioritising the retention of significant fabric in accordance with best-practice heritage principles.Â
Following stakeholder, cost and operational considerations, the option pursued adopts a retain and stabilise as found approach within the emerging public landscape.
The project is included on an interpretive trail within the emerging urban setting and share path along the creek. It delivers a safe, accessible and legible ruin, balancing heritage significance with pragmatic commercial and management considerations.Â
The Rockbank Inn is a landmark of rest and refuge and is treasured part of our community. As caretakers of this important landmark, Woodlea was committed to ensuring its history is respected, its character preserved, and its significance shared with generations to come. Through careful restoration, we aim to conserve and reignite into the Rockbank Inn story while keeping its authentic spirit intact so that it can continue to inspire pride, curiosity, and connection within our community.
