The Apmere-Mwerre Visitors-Park Project in Mparntwe is a multi-residential development for Aboriginal Hostels. It accommodates an additional 20 residents while significantly enhancing the cultural safety, site legibility, wayfinding and entry of the existing facility.

Many remote First-Nations visitors travel to Mparntwe to access healthcare, economic opportunities, community services, and domestic violence support. As visitors arrive in diverse family groups the new accommodation is designed to be flexible, with adaptable layouts capable of housing family groups from two to eight people.

The accommodation is connected by a walkway that provides shade and privacy screening for the new rooms. The entries of the rooms are set back from the pathway to create small, shared seating areas. The walkways double as verandahs to expand the seating areas and allow a visual connection to the shared courtyard while proving a layer of privacy and sense of ownership of the outdoor spaces for the users.

The new work is culturally safe.  The flexible room arrangements and entry improvements, expertly proposed by SDA, enhance our resident experience and increase our operational capacity. The project was delivered under budget and changed our expectations of the quality of accommodation that was possible to provide in Alice Springs. The new rooms are in high demand. We are also very proud that the project supported local First Nations man, Tama’s, paid work experience on-site while he completed year 12. Tama is now in full time employment with the project’s head contractor and plans on starting a carpentry apprenticeship this year.
