Address: 31 Torrens Street, Richmond

Overview

Nestled between the Coal River, Richmond Gaol and St Luke's Rectory, Richmond House was designed by 1+2 Architecture and built by Merlin Constructions in 2021. The property on which the house stands was formerly owned by the Chungs, a prominent Richmond family of market gardeners. The house design pays homage to the remaining sheds on the Chung's land, which the house overlooks.

The house is clad with a combination of charred timber (Shou Sugi Ban) and fibre-cement sheeting; the latter highlights the chamfered walls on two sides of the home. A focal point is the limestone pathway leading to a brightly painted entrance that reflects the rich earth on which the house sits. Passive solar design features include thermally broken windows and doors with larger glass areas focused on the north side of the home and sized/positioned for optimal sun/heat exposure. The home is comprised of two main buildings joined by a linkway. The main building hosts the kitchen and living areas, three bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry, and attic space. The other building contains a studio and garage. The interior of the home features Tasmanian oak, limestone and concrete flooring, and Tasmanian oak cabinetry.

In conjunction with Richmond 200, Open House Hobart is super excited to announce Open House Richmond. This special one-off event will be held on Saturday 24 + Sunday 25 February 2024, and will form part of an extensive program that celebrates Richmond’s bicentenary. Open House Hobart is an annual architecture program that opens some of Tasmania’s most unique buildings to the public, including private homes and historic buildings across lutruwita Tasmania. We acknowledge that Open House takes place on the land of the traditional owners of lutruwita (Tasmania) and pay respects to the palawa people, Tasmanian Aboriginal Community and to Elders - past, present and emerging.
