Overview

Join us for the 2024 Regional / Newcastle CPD event, held at Gosford Regional Gallery on 3rd May 2024. This year's forum will explore the challenges and opportunities of practicing on the fringe of major cities.

A total of 5 CPD points are available with 2 points available in the mandatory topics of: 

1. Understanding and respecting Country 
2. Sustainability, life cycle assessment and whole life carbon

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course participants should be able to:

  • Identify strategies by which architects may meaningfully contribute to community-led architecture;
  • Reflect on ways their own practice might further support social justice and ecological sustainability for communities;
  • Explain the how and why of incorporating local First Nations knowledge and aspirations into conceptual designs;
  • Describe examples of civic projects which have successfully integrated cultural strategies that connect communities and local histories to provide meaningful urban spaces; 


2021 Performance Criteria

This course will deliver outcomes related to the following Competencies from the 2021 National Standard of Competency for Architects:

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
PC2 Implement practice resources and apply ethical employment practice methods and quality assurance systems to facilitate efficient, consistent and timely delivery of architectural services.
PC4 Be able to apply principles of project and staff planning and resource costs to establish realistic and achievable timeframes.
PC 8 Be able to implement culturally responsive and meaningful engagement processes that respect the importance of Country and reciprocal relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples across architectural services.
PC10 Demonstrate understanding of the whole life carbon implications of procurement methods, materials, components and construction systems.
PC11 Be able to assess, recommend and/or select an appropriate procurement process, with consideration for its impact on all phases of a project – including design, documentation and project delivery – and provide advice to the client in terms of the level of scope of service for consultants.

PROJECT INITIATION AND CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
PC 17 Have an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ aspirations to care for Country and how these inform architectural design.
PC18 Be able to apply creative imagination, design precedents, research, emergent knowledge and critical evaluation in formulating and refining concept design options, including the exploration of three dimensional form and spatial quality
PC22 Identify and manage risks arising from real or perceived conflict of interests
PC24 Be able to prepare and analyse project development options in response to a project brief – its objectives, budget, user intent and built purpose, risk and timeframes, including environmental sustainability considerations.
PC27 Understand how to embed the knowledge, worldviews and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, shared through engagement processes, into the conceptual design in a meaningful, respectful and appropriate way.
PC30 Be able to explore options for siting a project, including integrating information and analysis of relevant cultural, social and economic factors.
PC35 Be able to assess operational and embodied carbon implications of materials, components, construction systems and supply chains (including transport) to achieve net zero whole life carbon when developing design concepts. This includes integrating relevant consultant expertise and advising on the impact of chosen materials, components and systems on carbon outcomes.

Carolyn Mitchell, FRAIA
Carolyn Mitchell Architects
 
Carolyn’s experience is broad across all scales of practice, from a small four person practice to major internationals. Over the past 30 years she has worked as a designer, detailer, interior designer, project manager, team, and practice leader in Australia and the UK.

Currently, Carolyn is teaching at the University of Sydney in Practice, and the University of NSW, Art, Design and Architecture, in Design Theory and History. She has also lectured at the University of Technology, Sydney in Practice.

She is passionate about how we design sustainable and inclusive spaces and places for the future multi-generational workforce and population, exploring avenues for shared working, living, learning, and support.

Carolyn sits on NSW Chapter Council, and is currently co-Chair of the NSW RAIA Practice of Architecture Committee, and sits on the National Practice Committee. She has been a juror and jury chair in the NSW Architecture Awards, including Multi-Residential and Urban Design, Small Projects, Residential Alts and Adds, Best in Practice, and the Student Awards.

She has published articles in the Architecture Bulletin, and has facilitated design review processes in studios and creative forums.

James Wilson is a Director of Lyons and a practice leader in design and briefing for civic, cultural, and educational projects. Highly experienced in the development and delivery of complex, multi-million dollar public precincts, his expertise lies in bringing together the collaborative nature of people-centred environments. James’ extensive experience over the last 20 years has seen him become a national leader in innovative civic projects, integrating cultural strategies that connect communities and local histories to provide meaningful urban places..

BEAU DE BELLE
RESEARCH FELLOW, RMIT

Beau de Belle, the Vice Chancellors Indigenous pre-doctoral Research Fellow at RMIT University's School of Architecture and Urban Design, resonates with his Gamilaraay heritage from Kamilaroi Country in Northern NSW. His work in art and design is informed by this connection. His doctoral research, ‘Message Stick Protocols’, investigates how Architects contribute to community-led architecture. It underscores community engagement and adherence to cultural protocols as vital for sustainable development. Beau advocates for project management that reflects Aboriginal communities’ needs, promoting empowerment and cultural authenticity in architecture. He strives to blend Aboriginal traditions with contemporary techniques to ensure that architecture supports social justice and ecological sustainability for communities.

HEATHER KEMBER
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, STRATEGY, UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE

Heather is the Assistant Director – Strategy at the Institute for Regional Futures, University of Newcastle. In this role she brings over 15 years experience across research, strategic planning, social science and infrastructure projects in the USA and Australia. Heather has studied psychology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels including obtaining a PhD in cognitive psychology from the University of Sydney. She brings a robust research background and strong skills in strategic thinking, planning and project management skills. Having lived in regional communities herself, Heather enjoys the opportunity to apply her skills to programs that deliver improved outcomes for regional communities. Heather has a particular passion for Indigenous engagement and has been a champion for embedding culturally responsive practices into projects and operations.

ANDREW NIMMO
PRINCIPAL, LAHNZIMMO ARCHITECTS

Andrew Nimmo graduated from the University of Queensland with Honours in 1986 and in 1994 established lahznimmo architects with partner Annabel Lahz in Sydney. The firm’s work is widely published and has received numerous awards from the Australian Institute of Architects.
Andrew maintains a special interest in architectural criticism and journalism and is a regular contributor to architectural journals. 
Andrew has delivered numerous professional lectures throughout Australia, is regularly invited to be a guest critic and lecturer at Australian universities and has been an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney. 
Andrew is a past president of the NSW Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects and a Life Fellow.

PAULO MACCHIA
NSW GOVERNMENT ARCHITECTS OFFICE

Paulo Macchia is the Director of Design Governance at Government Architect NSW. He Chairs the City of Gosford Design Advisory Panel and is currently the director responsible for the NSW Housing Pattern Book. He graduated from University of Newcastle, is a registered architect, holds a Masters of Sustainable Built Environment and is a Fellow of the Australia Institute of Architects. 
Paulo also established the Homes NSW Centre for Design which works to improve the design quality of social housing in NSW and recently established GANSW’s partnership with the NSW Reconstruction Authority to assist with the delivery of new housing in the flood affected communities of the Northern Rivers.

DAMIAN FUREY
FABRIC

Damien is an experienced registered Architect with a broad range of Architectural experience including residential, commercial and mixed-use developments. Upon completion of University in 2007, he has worked in some of the country's top firms and played a major part in the growth of a number of successful and awarded firms in regional areas.
Damien has a diverse portfolio which is a testament to his architectural and leadership skills. He has led the design and documentation teams on premium residential, commercial high-rise and mixed-use developments both locally and internationally. Damien has designed numerous award winning buildings, including The Pangolin in Newcastle’s Derby street.
Damien currently sits on the Regional committee for the AIA, has been a member on judging panels for the AIA New South Wales Architecture Awards and a past Member of the Built Environment Committee for the NSW chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects.

ANDREW DONALDSON
ADAD

Andrew is the Founder and Director of ADAD, Andrew Donaldson Architecture and Design; a high energy, optimistic, embedded mentoring practice based in Sydney and the Central Coast that values originality, brilliance, relationships, leadership and paying it forward.
 
ADAD specialises in delivering bespoke, customised, and highly designed residential homes, public art galleries, interiors, and joinery, with particular expertise in the creative transformation of complex natural landscapes, existing buildings and urban environments.
 
As an internationally recognised, full-service architectural firm, ADAD has been recently awarded the HIA Australian Home of the Year for their North Curl Curl House, the NSW Chapter Australian Institute of Architects Blacket Prize for their Watt Space Gallery, and NSW AIA Small Project Award for their Potts Point Apartment.
 
Andrew and ADAD have featured both on Grand Designs Australia TV and Amazon Prime Unbelievable Builds internationally.
 
Prior to launching ADAD, Andrew worked for 10 years on a multitude of cultural projects including as design architect on the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia redevelopment at Circular Quay on Sydney Harbour.
 
Andrew has travelled extensively across Europe, North America and the Middle East on multiple architectural scholarships experiencing and dissecting the world’s great museums, galleries, and residential homes, bringing that knowledge back to Australia.
 
Andrew graduated from the University of Newcastle with a Bachelor of Architecture (Hons.1) in 2005 and currently maintains ties to academia through his creative practice PhD candidature, and 20 year invited sessional tutoring and lecturing across all NSW universities in design, communication, and architectural practice.
 
Driving these pursuits is Andrew’s core passion of mentoring young creatives into following their dreams, particularly from Australia’s Regions.

ANDREW CARSON 
ATILIER AND CARSON

Andy has always loved design, as a little boy on long road trips up the coast he would amuse himself by picking out his favourite car models by looking at the shape of their taillights. He grew up surfing on the NSW Central Coast which gave him a strong affinity for the landscape, the local towering sandstone cliffs and twisted angophora gums were always a source of awe and inspiration. He always invokes a strong sense of place and nature in his design work.

He is passionate about modernism and minimalism and takes great pride in making the extremely detailed and difficult look simple.

Andy is both an architect and an industrial designer, so he has a very deep understanding of design principles and disciplines, which gives him a unique detailed approach.

Atelier Andy Carson is one of the most exciting small architecture studios in Australia. Based out of Sydney and the NSW Central Coast, but working across Australia, the studio has established itself as a leader in high end residential and commercial architecture. We are interested in projects ranging from single residential, major renovations to larger commercial, multi residential and hospitality buildings. We design by working closely with our clients, listening to their unique needs and coming up with beautiful design solutions to suite their lifestyle. We design for longevity, with a high level of care in the details because we believe it’s the small things that make the difference, in both in the way you experience architecture and in the service we provide.

ANITA PANOV
PANOV-SCOTT

Anita Panov established architecture practice PANOV—SCOTT together with partner Andrew Scott in 2012, following a decade each of apprenticeship with respected Sydney practices. Their work has been recognised locally and internationally, and includes public and private buildings, exhibitions, strategic planning and research-based speculations. Their practice is located between Elizabeth Bay and the Bouddi peninsula and has an ambition to engage meaningfully in the shaping of the physical and cultural world around us.
