Proposed changes to the minimum energy efficiency standards of the National Construction Code (Section J)

This session offers an overview of proposed changes to the next edition of the National Construction Code. The National Construction Code sets the minimum required level for the safety, health, amenity, accessibility and sustainability of buildings. Between 1 May and 1 July, the Australian Building Codes Board will be seeking public comments on the proposed changes. The proposed changes include an increase in the stringency of Section J, which deals with energy efficiency.

This session will deep dive into the changes proposed for section J, including the carbon and energy efficiency measures for building envelopes, renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, HVAC and the use of energy models to show compliance. 

The intent is to better equip AIA and AGWA members to make informed comments on the proposals. 

**The RAIA will hold some further sessions targeting ‘condensation’ and ‘waterproofing and watershedding’ for the NCC 2025 – stay tuned for this session information.

Erica Kenna, 

Erica works in the Policy and Analysis team at the Australian Building Codes Board. Erica is an energy efficiency specialist with over 20 years experience, having worked previously in the Commonwealth’s commercial building energy policy team, and as a consultant delivering energy ratings, audits, new building design reviews for NABERS Commitment Agreements, and energy efficiency upgrade projects. ?

Mike Dodd, 

Mike Dodd is an Assistant Manager at the Australian Building Codes Board and for the past 5 and a bit years he has been working on energy efficiency regulations for commercial and residential buildings. Prior to joining the ABCB that he spent 15 years in various Victorian state and local government bodies where he worked on programs that encouraged energy efficiency and sustainability in commercial and public buildings.

Feedback during the session will be collected via a third-party app to allow quicker insights and processing of contributions from this session.
