Proposed changes to the minimum energy efficiency standards of the National Construction Code (Section J)

This session offers an overview of proposed changes to the next edition of the National Construction Code. The National Construction Code sets the minimum required level for the safety, health, amenity, accessibility and sustainability of buildings. Between 1 May and 1 July, the Australian Building Codes Board will be seeking public comments on the proposed changes. The proposed changes include an increase in the stringency of Section J, which deals with energy efficiency.

This session will deep dive into the changes proposed for section J, including the carbon and energy efficiency measures for building envelopes, renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, HVAC and the use of energy models to show compliance.

The intent is to better equip AIA and AGWA members to make informed comments on the proposals.

**The RAIA will hold some further sessions targeting ‘condensation’ and ‘waterproofing and watershedding’ for the NCC 2025 – stay tuned for this session information.

This is open to members and industry who wish to participate in this coordinated response session. The session will be structured to capture:

  • The industry sector that you represented
  • Structured feedback questions surrounding specific changes in the NCC 2025 public draft for consultation Capture of feedback based on jurisdiction to identify any known issues that might occur
  • We wont be using the Q&A in the zoom session but instead using online collation QR style feedback so that we can categorise Q&A against the specific NCC parts for future reference. As such attendees acknowledge that they are providing feedback to the ABCB, RAIA and AGWA collectively.
