This course explores the Passivhaus approach to building design, which places emphasis on energy efficiency, sustainability, and healthy indoor environments. Through the use of a high-performance building envelope, continuous fresh air supply, and energy harvesting and heat recovery systems, the Passivhaus standard can significantly reduce heating energy demand by up to 90%. Additionally, the certification process is open to all individuals, regardless of certification status. The course emphasizes the importance of innovative thinking in the building industry and highlights the necessity of transitioning towards sustainable, healthy, and cost-effective buildings. The Passive House Institute is a renowned global authority in the development of Passive Houses, establishing standards for buildings, components, and professionals.

Passivhaus Part 1 will deliver outcomes related to the following Competencies from the 2015 National Standard of Competency for Architects: DESIGN: CONCEPTUAL DESIGN 3.4 Design response incorporates assessment of relevant legislation, codes and industry standards. DESIGN: SCHEMATIC DESIGN 4.1 Evaluation of design options in relation to project requirements. 4.7 Coordination and integration of appropriate environmental systems, including for thermal comfort, lighting and acoustics.
Passivhaus Part 1 will deliver outcomes related to the following Competencies from the 2021 National Standard of Competency for Architects: PRACTICE MANAGEMENT AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT PC12 Provide independent, culturally responsive and objective advice in accordance with relevant building codes, standards, technical specifications and guidelines, and planning regulations, including climate change implications, across all aspects of architectural practice. PROJECT INITIATION AND CONCEPTUAL DESIGN PC28 Be able to draw on knowledge from building sciences and technology, environmental sciences and behavioural and social sciences as part of preliminary design research and when developing the conceptual design to optimise the performance of the project. PC33 Be able to investigate, coordinate and integrate sustainable environmental systems – including water, thermal, lighting and acoustics – in response to consultants’ advice.

Architect / Senior Trainer Certified Passive House Designer Julia is a senior trainer and passionate architect who has been sharing her expertise in Australia since 2006. She has worked for leading architectural firms in Melbourne, Perth, and Darwin, gaining invaluable insights into Australia's diverse geographic regions and unique climate challenges. Julia is deeply committed to sustainability and energy-efficient building design and became a Certified Passive House Designer in 2018. Since then, she has been dedicated to driving change in the building industry and educating Australians on creating comfortable, healthy, and eco-friendly living spaces. In 2020, Julia joined Smart Plus Academy as a senior Passive House trainer, expanding her impact by educating building professionals across Australia about the Passive House standard.
