Earlier this year National Council agreed on five policy priorities for the Institute, which are forming the basis for our engagement with the major political parties during the federal election campaign. The policy priorities are:
-Sustainable Communities – Creating a built environment that sustains us into the future
-Design Culture – Showcasing our capacity to advance architecture, innovation and cultural ambition
-Climate Change – Enhancing the energy efficiency and resilience of our built environment
-Housing – Improving affordable, liveable and indigenous housing
-Regulation – Reforms to improve built environment outcomes, including the call for an Australian Government Architect position.
With the election date set for 7 September, the Institute has moved quickly to canvass the major political parties’ position on the Institute’s key policy priorities. The survey results will be shared with members in the last week of the election campaign.
We’ve also produced a ‘policy postcard’ outlining the five policy priorities (designed to be eye-catching and succinct) which is being sent to all federal politicians and candidates. Although the postcard is written with a federal political audience in mind, many of the ‘calls to action’ are relevant to state and territory chapter policy issues.
In line with the Institute’s strategic plan that ‘public policy on architecture and the built environment is substantial and effective’ the Institute actively engages with the federal government, opposition and departments to promote the strategies, policies and processes needed to create a built environment that can sustain us into the future.
The Institute has also established strong, collaborative policy networks within the built environment sector and through these memberships, the Institute actively engages on joint projects, research gathering, position setting and lobbying. The Institute’s political engagement will continue beyond the election campaign.
