Country to coast compete for NSW architectural excellence awards

From country to coast, river to mountain 34 very diverse architectural projects are in the running for prestigious Australian Institute of Architects’ 2019 NSW Country Division Awards. The awards showcase outstanding architectural design practice, celebrating the best in architecture from across country NSW.

‘This year’s entries presented an impressive collection of projects, ranging from modernist sensibility, public and commercial architecture, to contemporary beach houses and sophisticated interiors, all with the climate in mind,’ said Virginia Wong-See, jury chair and architect at architecture@altitude.

Each region across NSW was represented which inspired a diverse array of designs. All entries can be viewed in the Media Gallery

NSW Chapter President, Kathlyn Loseby, noted: ‘In creating beautiful designs that reflect our diverse communities across NSW, regional architects play a vital role in enhancing our regional towns and helping connect people.’

Jury chair Ms Wong-See said: ‘Country NSW is such a beautiful place and this year’s Awards entries reflected the deep understanding among architects from around the region of the importance of design that is sensitive to place, the local ecosystem and sustainability. The jury were inspired by the many high calibre entries.’

The 34 projects are competing in ten award categories, including new residential housing, alternations and additions, interiors, public architecture and more. Winners in each category will be decided by a panel of expert judges Damien Furey (Fabric Architecture), Gabrielle Pelletier (Sam Crawford Architects), Joseph Paonessa (JT Paonessa) and artist Tom Arthur.

The final category is to be decided by members of the public who can show their support for a local or favourite project by voting in the People’s Choice Award before 4pm on Wednesday 9 October.
