ACT Government’s Infrastructure Plan

The ACT Chapter welcomes the ACT Government’s $14 billion Infrastructure Blueprint announced today by the Chief Minister Andrew Barr.

Much of Canberra’s bigger infrastructure projects over the next 10-15 years such as the expansion of the light rail network, the SPIRE project at the Canberra Hospital and the expansion of the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children have already been detailed.

Our members look forward to contributing their professional expertise to projects such as the design and development of new schools at Throsby, Kenny, Denman Prospect, the redevelopment of the Canberra Theatre and a new CIT campus to replace the Reid campus. The Canberra Stadium remains a longer term priority for the Government along with the development of a new Convention Centre. We look forward to working with the ACT Government on innovative and sustainable design solutions for our public schools.

We have long called for greater housing options for Canberrans to meet their changing needs. We are pleased to note that the Infrastructure Plan has shifted its focus from greenfield development to urban renewal to stem Canberra’s sprawl to meet growing population demand.

Architects, as highly trained and regulated professionals, are well placed to assist the ACT Government to meet the challenges of a growing yet compact city with a firm emphasis on the importance of the public realm achieved through design quality.
