SUMMARY:Planned Cover: Safe Design
DESCRIPTION:Since 2005\, there has been a shift in clients’ and authorities’ perception of consultants’ responsibility for the occupational health and safety aspects of their design. Some states have implemented new laws to impose fines upon consultants whose designs do not adequately address safety issues. This seminar considers the applicable “safe design” law\, provides a snapshot of national laws\, and considers risk management strategies to minimise the risks associated with “safe design”.

SUMMARY:Learning from one another # 2 | Conversations Through Architecture | First House
DESCRIPTION:The second talk in this series will be facilitated by Shamus Mulcahy\, and will feature discussions from Cath Hall\, Neal Mackintosh\, Robert Morris-Nunn and Leigh Woolley. This year a series of talks / discussions will be offered with the aim to share experience and facilitate discussion through face-to-face contact.  The second talk in this ‘mini series’ will again be based on the theme of ‘first house’. The intent is to reflect upon the first ‘stand alone’ dwelling designed under your own name\, (or responsibility) not necessarily your best house\, or your favourite house\, but where your architectural values were pinned to the mast!

SUMMARY:Open Space Conversation | Good Enough Air Tightness In Australian Residential Buildings
DESCRIPTION:This July the Tasmanian Chapter’s sustainability committee welcomes Freya Su\, a PhD student from the Tasmanian Architectural Science Lab (TASL) at the University of Tasmania for a presentation and all-in conversation about building performance simulation and its relationship with climate data methodology. Before embarking on her current studies\, Freya assisted Mark Dewsbury in his lab and has co-authored publications about condensation and mould in buildings. She is the director of Snug House with 6 years of experience in accredited airtightness testing of residential buildings in Tasmania. She will be presenting a number of case studies of noteable buildings and their airtightness results. This series will be led by the Sustainability Committee chair\, Dr Mark Dewsbury\, and the committee to create time and space for people to engage in meaningful conversation about key issues in sustainability.

SUMMARY:Value Talk 03: Living Legacies – Torbreck revisited
DESCRIPTION:In the midst of a housing crisis\, Australian cities are being called to rethink what “home” means. The dream of the quarter-acre block is giving way to a future that is smaller\, denser\, more flexible — and often shared. As affordability declines and urban density rises\, the freestanding home is no longer the default model it once was. Enter Torbreck. Completed in 1960 by architects Aubrey Job and Robert Froud\, Torbreck was Brisbane’s first high-rise residential tower — a bold departure from traditional housing typologies. Promoted as a “new concept in gracious living\,” its modernist design and amenity-rich vision heralded a new era of vertical living in Queensland.
