SUMMARY:Archibubs x Value Talk 08: Public Space\, Play and Possibilities
DESCRIPTION:What might our public spaces make possible if we made more room for play? In the upcoming Value Talk\, Public Spaces\, Play and Possibilities\, we will  explore how play can spark curiosity\, bring people together and make our public spaces more welcoming for everyone. From art and architecture to the everyday places we share\, we’ll consider how design can invite us to explore and connect with our surroundings and with one another. How can a familiar place invite an unexpected encounter? What can children’s ways of seeing and using space teach us? And how can designers create opportunities for people of different ages\, abilities and backgrounds to join in? Through projects\, ideas and experiences\, our speakers will share how they approach these questions in practice. We’ll explore the processes and materials that open up possibilities for play\, and what it takes to bring those possibilities to life. Join us for a conversation about imagination\, belonging and what our public spaces could become.

SUMMARY:Design Intelligence: Sustainable Architecture Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:Design Intelligence is a recurring Victorian Chapter forum focused on design thinking rather than finished objects. The series positions architecture as an evolving intellectual practice; tested through built work\, challenged through works in progress\, and sharpened through debate. This event brings together the winners of the Sustainable Architecture category in the 2026 Victorian Architecture Awards to ask if sustainability is now a minimum expectation of every project\, should it still have its own separate award? Is a category like this important to recognise practices working ahead of the rest of the field\, or does it suggest that environmental performance is still treated as a specialisation rather than a base condition of good architecture.

SUMMARY:Launch of the Victorian Chapter AI in Architecture Working Group
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence is changing the conditions of architectural practice faster than most of us have been able to absorb. Tools that were experimental a year ago are now part of everyday workflows in some practices\, while others are still working out where these tools belong\, what they mean for their teams and how they sit alongside our professional and ethical obligations. The Victorian Chapter has established the AI in Architecture Working Group so that we can approach these questions together as a profession\, rather than leaving each practice to navigate them alone. This launch event will provide an overview of where AI stands in relation to our industry and consider what is likely to unfold over the coming years. Gwyllim Jahn (RMIT) and Chris Gilbert (Head of Architectural Solutions\, ASH) will share their perspectives on how the technology is developing and how it is already being deployed in practice\, drawing on examples from research and from project work. The value of these examples lies less in the novelty of the tools themselves than in what they reveal about how design processes\, skills and roles are beginning to shift. The evening will also open a conversation about how the Institute can best support members through this period of rapid change\, whether through guidance\, professional development\, advocacy or shared resources. Members’ experiences\, concerns and ideas will help shape the Working Group’s priorities\, and we encourage practitioners at every stage of adopting AI\, including those who remain sceptical\, to come along and contribute.

SUMMARY:Value Talk 09: SLQ Revisited
DESCRIPTION:It has been 20 years since the State Library of Queensland was redeveloped by Donovan Hill and Peddle Thorp Architects\, expanding the 1980s brutalist building by Robin Gibson and Partners to create one of Australia’s most cherished public spaces. To celebrate this anniversary\, we will look back at the collaborative design process between the architects and the client. We will then unpack the impact that this redevelopment has had on public space and design practice in Brisbane and beyond.
