SUMMARY:Christina Deluchi and Guillermo Fernández-Abascal: Images of Architecture
DESCRIPTION:What is the relationship between architecture and its depiction in photography? Together\, Christina Deluchi and Guillermo Fernández-Abascal will unpack a series of images about architecture and the city. Moving between Medellín\, Tirana\, and Bahrain\, and various exhibitions\, projects\, and places\, the images explore forms of authorship\, transformation processes\, collaborations and techniques\, urban politics\, and everyday life in contemporary contexts. Connected by their stories\, each image examines the reciprocal relationship between photography and architecture by establishing a dialogue on how such images construct the built environment. \nThis program marks the beginning of an ongoing architecture discussion series led by Andrew Wilson\, Senior Lecturer in Architecture at University of Queensland\, and Andrew Leach\, Professor of Architectural History at Queensland University of Technology.

SUMMARY:LYSAGHT SPEAKER SERIES | OPEN HOUSE HOBART 2025 | EVERYONE DESERVES A HOME: MORE OF US TOGETHER
DESCRIPTION:How the efforts of individuals and small groups can incrementally retrofit our existing suburbs\, block by block\, with more affordable housing. The urgent need for more affordable housing remains unabated and instead of waiting for government or the development sector to fix it\, people are looking for housing solutions they can undertake themselves.  Tapping into this sentiment\, architectural critic and academic\, Dr Helen Norrie\, will guide a conversation between four panellists exploring the opportunities presented by retrofit-led densification of underutilised suburban blocks and under-occupied housing stock.  Contingent to this approach is the notion of more of us living closer together and reaping the plentiful rewards of sharing space and resources.

SUMMARY:Architecture's Eco-Humanist Turn
DESCRIPTION:A lecture by Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen \nThe talk is centered around the decade following the Second World war when concern for the human condition gave rise to a new intellectual sensibility\, ecohumanism\, which led architects to pay attention to how humans inhabit the earth. Work and words by architects Sverre Fehn\, Mies van der Rohe\, Richard Neutra\, and Rudolf Schwarz will be placed in the context of a broader intellectual culture defined by era-defining thinkers\, such as Albert Camus\, Erich Fromm\, Martin Heidegger\, and Lewis Mumford.

SUMMARY:Unconscious Bias in Architecture Practices
DESCRIPTION:This session emerges from the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2023 Diversity and Inclusion in the Architectural Profession survey\, which revealed that only half of respondents believe the profession values diversity and inclusion\, despite strong progress within individual workplaces. Drawing on evidence from the survey and Institute focus groups\, we will discuss how diversity can be a strategic advantage for design excellence\, resilience\, and professional integrity.

SUMMARY:OPEN HOUSE HOBART 2025 | JANE COLLEGE
DESCRIPTION:Founded by the Tasmanian Council of Churches in 1950\, Jane College was established as an all-female\, non-denominational Christian College in an 1885 house. Its namesake\, Jane\, Lady Franklin\, wife of Tasmanian Governor and explorer Sir John Franklin\, was an early advocate for women’s education in colonial society. Through subsequent building extensions\, additions\, and acquisitions from the 1950s onwards\, Jane’s campus preserves an array of architectural styles\, including mid-century student accommodation\, and a historically significant fishpond dating to the 1850s. The College has recently undergone some refurbishment\, engaging stylist Meg Clark and local artist Hamish Hall.

SUMMARY:OPEN HOUSE HOBART 2025 | FLOWERPOT HOUSE
DESCRIPTION:Placed carefully within the parameters of an existing approved building envelope\, the Flowerpot house presents living spaces to the forested waterfront escapement. A purposeful wall to the west protects privacy & sight lines from the road above the site\, while also providing a sequence of entry. The demarcation curates afternoon light through the home’s interior. Opening to the north\, social spaces flood with sunlight while sleeping spaces and a small working studio tuck more privately to the south. This is a simple home for rural living that is mindful of its scale within the broader context.

SUMMARY:OPEN HOUSE HOBART 2025 | SUPREME COURT OF TASMANIA
DESCRIPTION:The Supreme Court of Hobart is an exemplary\, enduring piece of public architecture that makes a poised contribution to the city of Hobart. The plaza between the two court buildings creates a diagonal landscape link between St David’s Park\, the adjacent Parliament House and the Sullivans Cove waterfront. The Court strives to combine the Modernist concept of an ‘alien object floating in the landscape’ with contextual regard to the neighbouring buildings and street. Join Supreme Court judges and architect\, Peter Partridge\, on a unique guided tour of the highest court in the state\, which includes court rooms\, underground tunnels and criminal holding cells. Inside\, marvel at the Modernist details and exquisite Tasmanian timber joinery of the court rooms while judges share their insight into the judicial process. The Supreme Court\, Hobart\, by Department of Public Works/Peter Partridge won the 25 Year Award for Enduring Architecture at the Australian Institute of Architect’s 2010 National Architecture Awards.

SUMMARY:OPEN HOUSE HOBART 2025 | PHILIP SMITH CENTRE
DESCRIPTION:Constructed in 1911 as the Philip Smith Training College\, the Philip Smith Centre is an important example of ‘hygienic’ design\, which values light and ventilation. It references the Gothic character of the adjacent Domain House\, while being an Arts and Crafts building and has been maintained as a community education building since 1997. Lovell Chen with Hansen Yuncken have sympathetically restored the building to its original glory\, as a purpose-built learning and teaching facility for the University of Tasmania.

Designed by Woods Bagot with builders Hansen Yuncken\, the project restores Morris-Nunn and Associates’ 1997 structure\, including its iconic 22-metre glass dome\, while reinstating the native urban forest beneath. New buildings and contemporary insertions complement the original\, creating adaptable teaching and collaborative spaces for Business\, Economics\, Humanities\, and Social Sciences\, and reactivating this landmark for the University of Tasmania.

SUMMARY:OPEN HOUSE HOBART 2025 | UTAS SPECULATE III: HOUSING FUTURES EXHIBITION
DESCRIPTION:Housing has become a key issue in Australia\, with housing availability and affordability becoming increasingly challenging. SPECULATE III: Housing Futures presents ideas developed by students from the School of Architecture & Design at the University of Tasmania for multi-residential housing in Hobart to provide more diverse housing typologies closer to the city and services. These speculative ideas demonstrate how existing under-utilised sites could be transformed to provide new opportunities for urban living\, transforming the city into a vibrant and socially\, economically and ecologically sustainable environment. Join us for the exhibition launch and hear from students and University of Tasmania Senior Architecture and Design Lecturer Dr. Helen Norrie.

SUMMARY:OPEN HOUSE SOUTHERN MIDLANDS 2025 | LONSDALE HOMESTEAD
DESCRIPTION:Near Kempton\, Lonsdale began as a modest 1823 Colonial Georgian farmhouse\, later gaining a grand Victorian Georgian front in 1855. Its bread oven\, stonework\, timber lintels and hidden shingle roof hint at settler life and rising pastoral fortunes. For over 150 years a family home\, it’s now lovingly preserved by Alan Townsend\, whose careful restoration celebrates original craftsmanship\, historic wallpaper and the stories still waiting to be uncovered.
