SUMMARY:Design Choices | Shiel Street Community Housing
DESCRIPTION:Though a balance of rational and resident prioritised design strategies\, Shiel Street Community Housing verifies the notion that quality housing can be understated\, affordable and delightful. This CPD session will focus on design strategies employed for this award-winning project. More broadly\, it intends to demonstrate how this as a case study carries lessons for other housing projects to deliver rational and resident-prioritised outcomes. SUMMARY:Bob Marshman Building Tour: Passivhaus Design
DESCRIPTION:The Bob Marshman Building is Australia’s first certified Passivhaus training centre at the Construction Training Centre Campus in Salisbury. The client approached Deicke Richards to deliver a new training centre on the campus’s visually prominent site and established strong sustainability ambitions for the project from the outset to be built as a Living Laboratory exemplar demonstrating how high-performing\, carbon neutral buildings built with traditional building materials could become the new norm within the construction industry. Subtropical design principles such as orientation\, rainwater collection and passive design strategies were key to the project’s design from the early concept stages. It was critical to create a testing ground commercial building almost vernacular in nature with sustainable\, easily available materials that dealt with the particulars of subtropical climate and could easily be replicated in future using familiar construction materials.

SUMMARY:Living Design Series: Unlocking the Potential of Existing City Assets
DESCRIPTION:The Living Design Series emphasises sustainable and adaptable design solutions\, showcasing building and their spaces as dynamic entities that serve the needs of users. It initiates dialogue on how design can shape healthier and more resilient environments for people and the planet.  This series has been curated by the Queensland Climate Action and Sustainability Committee.   The series will consist of four consecutive webinars. Each webinar will include a 40-minute presentation followed by a Q&A session.  The May 2026 webinar\, “Unlocking the Potential of Existing City Assets\,” explores how reimagining workplaces can reinvest in ageing office stock. Through adaptive reuse\, projects reduce carbon impact while enhancing user experience and supporting CBD revitalisation.  The session highlights architect-led approaches such as designing within constraints to unlock spatial value\, embedding circular design through retention and material reuse\, and working with Queensland developers to demonstrate design and commercial benefits. It also covers early contractor collaboration and strategies to improve daylight\, ventilation\, and climate resilience. Case studies such as 450 Queen Street and Midtown Centre show how adaptive reuse extends asset life and creates flexible\, connected workplaces.  Together\, these approaches demonstrate how reuse can deliver environmental and commercial value while shaping resilient\, people-focused cities.
