SUMMARY:SITE VISIT | THE TASMANIAN HOUSE 3 | JIRI LEV ARCHITECTURE
DESCRIPTION:Housing crisis\, affordability crisis\, environmental crisis\, health and healthcare crisis\, social cohesion crisis – are our current conditions exceptional? It may be argued that these in fact always informed and propelled life. What has changed however is our autonomy in dealing with these challenges. Up until the middle of the last century\, it was common for whole villages and suburbs to be built by groups of neighbours lending each other hand\, constructing simple yet practical homes\, creating cohesive neighbourhoods. The Tasmanian House 3\, currently under construction\, is not another innovative\, original-at-all-cost\, architectural masterpiece\, nor an attempt to find one more new answer to the questions we face. Instead\, tracing back our footsteps to where the way was lost\, the project seeks to return the accountability\, agency and ability to influence one’s own lot back to the common man. It is not trying to reinvent the wheel but rather remember what the wheel was. Open source plans for the Tasmanian House 2 have been downloaded over 8000 times and many are currently under construction. The current project is conceived as a practical learning and teaching opportunity for architecture students\, graduates\, architects and general public\, at different times\, focusing on proven track record in buildability\, affordability\, sustainability\, health improvement and liveability.

SUMMARY:Learning From One Another | Conversations Through Architecture | First House
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Leigh Woolley and Shamus Mulcahy\, this year a series of talks / discussions will be offered with the aim to share experience and facilitate discussion through face-to-face contact.  To kick this off a ‘mini series’ around the theme of ‘first house’ will be held over several months\, and longer if there is interest. The intent is to reflect upon the first ‘stand alone’ dwelling designed under your own name\, (or responsibility) not necessarily your best house\, or your favourite house\, but where your architectural values were pinned to the mast!

SUMMARY:Planned Cover: Safe Design
DESCRIPTION:Since 2005\, there has been a shift in clients’ and authorities’ perception of consultants’ responsibility for the occupational health and safety aspects of their design. Some states have implemented new laws to impose fines upon consultants whose designs do not adequately address safety issues. This seminar considers the applicable “safe design” law\, provides a snapshot of national laws\, and considers risk management strategies to minimise the risks associated with “safe design”.
