SUMMARY:Design Intelligence: Civic in Nature: Design in Service of the City and its People
DESCRIPTION:Design Intelligence is conceived as a recurring Victorian Chapter forum focused on design thinking rather than finished work. The series positions architecture as an evolving intellectual practice – tested through built work\, challenged through works in progress\, and sharpened through debate. Our third event is jointly presented through the AIA and Urban Design Forum Australia.  Its focus is on urban scale projects that have a civic impact on the wider city and\, crucially\, provide a degree of generosity for people that improves the overall urban condition.  The discussion will examine how design intelligence is formed\, transferred\, and contested over time between the project authors and the stakeholder and communities they serve.

This is the first in a three-part Lean In series exploring regenerative materials and the role of specification\, research\, and design decision-making in enabling this shift in practice. Across the series\, speakers will examine how architects and designers can rethink material selection through the lenses of human health\, carbon\, circularity\, and ecological regeneration. Part 1 reframes material selection through the lens of human and ecological health. It explores how everyday specifications impact indoor environments\, supply chains\, and ecosystems — and what it means to move beyond “low toxicity” toward regenerative materials that actively contribute to ecological and human wellbeing. Join Martha Lewis (Henning Larsen) and Nicola Smith (Living Future Oceania) as they discuss the evolving role of architects and designers in shaping healthier built environments\, the opportunities and challenges of specifying healthier materials\, and the value of transparency and regenerative thinking in redefining and achieving true sustainability in practice. The overarching series explores the role of material specification\, research and design considerations that enable this shift.  In Part 2 of this Lean In series we explore how architects and designers can evaluate\, compare\, and measure materials and building systems in the design process. We hear from Lucy Marsland (Atelier Ten) and Adam Kolsrud (Wardle) on how sustainability value systems have been embedded in their practice and the considerations\, tools and methods for assessing upfront carbon in materials and building systems on projects. Building on recent industry momentum around circularity\, Part 3 focuses on implementation – how regenerative intent can be translated into documentation\, procurement\, and construction processes. The session explores how circular thinking can move beyond isolated acts of reuse toward more integrated approaches to material lifecycles\, deconstruction\, procurement\, and long-term stewardship. Join Bettina Robinson and Tim Brooks (Fieldwork)\, alongside Richard Stokes and Cameron McIntosh (Arup)\, as they discuss practical approaches to circular specification\, designing for deconstruction and material reuse\, and the realities of implementation across projects and supply chains. Through applied case studies and interdisciplinary perspectives\, the session will explore contractor considerations including cost\, risk\, warranties\, logistics\, and the opportunities for embedding circular thinking into everyday practice.
