Valuing 20th Century Heritage – Countering the rise of the disposable building
In cities across Australia, a new trend of rapid redevelopment has emerged. Instead of lasting a century or more, rich public landmarks have been earmarked for demolition, in some cases less than 20 years after they were built. In Sydney this has been most notable in the recent controversy over stadia demolitions, whilst in Melbourne a significant part of Federation Square was destined for landfill. In South Australia the recent cases of the Marion Cultural Centre and Shed 26 paint a worrying picture that many now see our built environment as endlessly re-buildable. This attitude ignores both the cultural and civic value of such places and the climate and biodiversity emergency of our times.
Join architects Susan Philips (Phillips Pilkington Architects), Anthony Coupe (Mulloway Studio) and Michael Smith (Atelier Red+Black) in a lively discussion about how we value our 20th Century heritage and what can be done to protect it.
