DESIGN WA UPDATE
Join Government Architect Geoff Warn and Design WA Director Nic Brunsdon for an update on Design WA, our state government planning initiative to ensure good design outcomes across all scales of development.
Discussion will cover the now-gazetted Stage 1 (focusing on apartment design), the role of design review and the upcoming work on precinct design and medium density. Design WA ensures that design quality plays an important role in the planning system and architects are therefore key to the development – and implementation – of the policy suite.
Design WA Stage 1 was recently awarded the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) 2019 Awards for Planning Excellence in the category of Improving Planning Processes.
Nic Brunsdon has recently begun with the State Government’s Department of Planning, Lands, and Heritage as the director of Design WA. Design WA is a State Government initiative to ensure good design is at the centre of all development in Western Australia. In this role he is overseeing the full policy suite, which includes, Apartments, Precincts, Activity Centres, Neighbourhoods, and Medium-Density housing.
In 2015 Nic was the winner of the Australian Institute of Architects Emerging Architect Award, firstly for Western Australia and then nationally. He is a past nominee for the 40 under 40 young business leaders award, a nominated thought leader for the City of Perth, the 2015 recipient of the Dulux International Study Tour for Emerging Architects, the 2017/18 recipient of the Gil Nicol Biennial International Study Bursary, a founding Board Member of Activate Perth, and has two projects currently shortlisted as finalists at the World Architecture Festival Awards.
Geoff Warn was appointed WA Government Architect in November 2013. As Government Architect he provides leadership and independent strategic advice to government to improve the design of public buildings and spaces, and enhance the quality of the built environment. In this role he has advised on major State Government projects including Perth Stadium, the New Museum Project and METRONET, and significant planning policy initiatives such as Design WA. Geoff also Chairs the State Design Review Panel which is tasked with reviewing the design quality of significant and strategic built environment projects and initiatives.
