With its sustainability credentials and fast build times as well as developments in material and construction technologies, timber is enjoying a renaissance. Beautiful, resilient projects of wide ranging scale are emerging across all typologies.

We head to University of Sydney, where we start the day with speakers who will present expert knowledge of timber properties and performance in different environments and at varying scales to help designers understand how to work with its qualities and characteristics to create strong and sustainable buildings.

After Timber Talks, attend a Timber Workshop on Digital Design and Fabrication of Timber Plate structures. This 2-hour course and 1-hour lecture will introduce participants to computational design strategies for cutting-edge timber building technologies, including digital fabrication of integral timber joints and closed loop digital design workflows for timber plate structures.

Dr David Fletcher – Timber Development Association

David’s doctoral work looked at the issues of sustainable business design and processes, he continues to do research in the engineered wood products area and joined the Timber Development Association/NSW division to educate and promote the use of timber-based products.

Dijana Tasevsk – Associate Director – Tzannes

Graduating from the University of Sydney, Dijana has delivered technically complex and challenging projects with creative design solutions in her 17 years at Tzannes. She was the project architect for International House, Sydney’s first commercial timber building in Barangaroo, Associate Director on Daramu House, the sister building of International House currently under construction, as well as a timber university building currently awaiting planning approval.

Nicholas Gurney

In 2010 he completed a Bachelor of Industrial Design and designed the Yardstix House with passive haus principles; low-energy buildings that require little-to-no energy for space heating or cooling.

Alex Ognjenovski

In collaboration with Nicholas Gurney, Alex constructed the Yardstix House, a fully self-contained 20sqm secondary dwelling (aka ‘Granny Flat’) constructed from Cross Laminated Timber and built in rapid time.


Participants will develop integrated, closed loop design and fabrication workflows for the production of timber plate structures. This will include:

  • Introduction to engineered wood products (EWPs), mass timber structures, and CNC timber manufacture.
  • Parametric design of integral mechanical joints for various types of timber construction.
  • Calibration of joint parameters to account for critical features such as manufacturing tolerance and mechanical behaviour.
  • Design workflow for a complex structure using 3D parts and joints, including toolpath generation. Examples will utilise the Rhino/Grasshopper Timber Plate Structures (TPS) Toolbox.

Note: Participants in the workshop arer recommended to have a basic understanding of paramedic design software, e.g Rhino Grasshopper.


Jun.Prof. Dr. Christopher Robeller – TU Kaiserslautern

He leads the Digital Timber Construction group DTC at TU Kaiserslautern. He is a registered architect and has previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research Digital Fabrication NCCR dfab at ETH Zurich, as a doctoral assistant at the Timber Construction Laboratory IBOIS at EPFL Lausanne, and as a research associate at the Institute of Computational Design ICD, at the University of Stuttgart.

Christopher holds a Doctor of Sciences from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology EPFL, and a Professional Diploma in Architecture with Distinction from London Metropolitan University.

His research of innovative timber structures, design for assembly and digital fabrication is widely published in scientific journals, books, conferences and exhibitions, and received the best paper award at the Advances in Architectural Geometry conference in 2014.

The research has been implemented in experimental structures including the ICD/itke pavilion 2010, the 2013 IBOIS curved folded wood pavilion and the 2018 X-fix Timberdome pavilion, as well as buildings such as the timber folded plate structure for the 2017 Vidy Theater in Lausanne and the 2018 Multihalle Manternach.

Eduardo De Oliveira Barata – Associate Lecturer – Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning

Eduardo de Oliveira Barata is a registered architect in NSW, holds a lecturer position in the Faculty of Architecture Design and Planning at the University of Sydney and is the director of B A R A T A. Eduardo joined Urban Future Organization (UFO) in 2005, a collective of self-organised architecture studios sharing common design strategies in practice and academic discourse.
