Regional CPD – Bendigo Soldiers’ Memorial Institute by Lovell Chen
21 Nov 2019 at 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm AEDT$25 – $70
As a part of the Institute’s Regional CPD Program, Anne-Marie Treweeke and Milica Tumbas of Lovell Chen are pleased to provide a presentation and tour of the Bendigo Soldiers’ Memorial Institute, a shortlisted entry in the Heritage Category of the Victorian Architecture Awards 2019.
In a parkland setting in central Bendigo, a splendid building with its own roof-level band rotunda stands as a permanent war memorial, honouring those who served. It was designed by local architect George Dawson Garvin and completed in 1921 for the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Since then the Bendigo Soldiers’ Memorial Institute has evolved into a museum as well as a memorial. In a recent project, architect and heritage consultant Lovell Chen helped the Institute ensure the viability of its heritage-listed building through restoration, reconstruction and adaptation works. The project combined conservation of the 1921 fabric — including the underpinning of the building to cap the old mineshaft beneath — and the addition of a companion pavilion that enables the organisation to become a borrowing and lending institution at a national level, with gallery space designed to Passive House standard. The restored Memorial Hall and its new pavilion make a cohesive ensemble, designed to be seen in the round. Inside, the pavilion has an unusual form: two levels surrounded by a contemporary interpretation of an arcaded loggia. The inner areas are highly insulated and environmentally controlled, surrounded by a naturally-lit timber-lined atmospheric walkway.
