Bill Lucas: Architect Utopian
Bill Lucas was one of the clearest thinkers and the most unique architects in Australia, designing structure and form without reference to any type or style. These buildings became the gold standard, unattainable and unrepeatable for their pure form and trans-substance. Lucas was a utopian, in a futuring sense. He believed in and searched out communities that he could build up and bring together in architecture, he would say as a solution to the disintegrating community. After 25-years of conventional practice, Lucas set about building an architectural resource for a broad architectural community. This resource is the archive that Bill Lucas: Architect Utopian will draw upon.
Architect and writer Peter Lonergan is Director of Cracknell & Lonergan Architects, a firm he co-founded with Julie Cracknell in 1984. Spanning their 35-years of experience, their work has woven across the fields of architecture, interior design, heritage conservation, public art, exhibition curation and design and publishing. Co-editor behind the 2018 publication Bruce Rickard: A Life in Architecture, Peter and Julie’s recent research endeavours have taken on board the important role of recalling, exploring and critiquing the legacy of Sydney’s Modernist architects. Cracknell & Lonergan Architects have a long history of working in a number of areas of environmental heritage. Listed as Heritage Architects with the NSW Heritage Office, their work covers consultation, design and restoration. They have been awarded multiple times for their conservation efforts.
