Join us for an afternoon of site tour to two houses at South Fremantle, organised by EMAGN.
The site tour to Parmelia House by Philip Stejskal Architecture is an alterations & additions project, essentially a larger sibling to a circa 1898 detached duplex cottage. This is followed by a tour and a sundowner to architect Eamon Broderick’s own Shed House, that sees the conversion of a former crayfishermans shed into a home for a large family.
A built proposal of an almost direct upscaling of the original cottage, adapted to handle greater exposure and elevation, modelled to capture available views and breezes, equipped to shut out adverse weather and summers sun.
The result is a project that takes its cues from family – nuclear and extended.
The tour group will be split in two groups sequentially for this house.
The design is based on two key ideas; when walking into the home the generous volume of the warehouse should be felt; secondly the design celebrates the texture, detail and history of the existing building and its former use.
New accommodation has been placed into the large volume of the shed as freestanding “box” elements stopping short of the steel roof trusses and perimeter brick walls.
This creates the sensation of the house as a group of small buildings within a private secure compound. These small buildings have cosy intimate interiors quite distinct from the large industrial volumes of the living areas.
