CLIMATE ACTION: MITIGATION, ADAPTATION, EXTRA VALUE CREATION – LIVESTREAM
30 Oct 2019 at 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm AEDT
Climate Action: In conversation with Prof.dr.ir. Andy van den Dobbelsteen
Based on climate science, there is great urgency to deal with climate change, both by preparing for the changes that are already developing and in the sense of avoiding complete run-away climate change by the reduction of greenhouse gases, especially through energy transition of the built environment. Industries and the general public often see this climate action as problematic and costly, not understanding the benefits of a transition to a more liveable environment, for humans as well as nature. In this seminar, Andy will shortly present the science underlying climate urgency, the necessity to make changes in all of our lives, and mostly focus on solutions for climate mitigation and adaptation that also contribute to the creation of extra value, with examples from his work in Europe.
Prof.dr.ir. Andy van den Dobbelsteen
Andy van den Dobbelsteen is full professor of Climate Design & Sustainability at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of TU Delft. He is Principal Investigator with the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS), chairs the Scientific Advisory Council of NL Greenlabel and is general board member of the Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC). He was external member of the Rli (Council for the Living Environment) committee to advise the state minister on a carbon-free heat supply. He is active in various committees and juries.
Together with his team Andy has led and conducted many research projects in the area of energy, climate and sustainability of the built environment, among which Climate Proof Cities (on urban climate adaptation), Better Airport Regions (on circular airports), City-zen (on energy transition of European cities), and Moveable Nexus (on integrated urban facilities for food, water and energy). His work on urban energy transition made it to the national news twice.
Andy is faculty advisor of the TU Delft MOR team, which in Szentendre (Hungary) in the summer of 2019, at the Solar Decathlon Europe 2019, won a world record of awards (3 x gold, 4 x silver, 1 x bronze, in 10 categories). Before, he had been faculty advisor of the team that in Versailles won 5 awards during the Solar Decathlon Europe 2014. He is responsible for the open online course Zero-Energy Design, which includes mini-documentaries and the short film Energy Slaves, about the energy consumption of a common household.
Andy’s approach in education, research and valorization is based on the optimal use of the local circumstances and potential of renewable sources. He lectures and participates in workshops, nationally and internationally, and has written numerous publications, both scientific, professional and popular; in his limited leisure time he writes thrillers and sports a lot.
In 2018, Andy became Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion for his long-time work in the area of sustainability. In 2019 he received the Academic Society Award from KIVI, the Dutch Royal Institute of Engineers, for the way he communicates and discusses his scientific work with society. In the same year he ended 3rd in the ‘ABN AMRO Sustainable 50’ ranking for Dutch professionals in the building industry, an uncommon performance for an academic.
