Alts + Adds Masterclass: Thinking outside the box
1 Mar 2018 at 8:00 am AEST$299
This is not an actual event. This has been created as a test.
Brisbane Open House and the Australian Institute of Architects challenge you to think outside the box. We’ve brought together three big thinkers to share how they challenge tradition, break down stereotypes and turn established ideas upside down.
This set of three 45-minute seminar sessions followed by a curated think-tank will allow you to tap into the creative side of your brain. Learn how thought leader Ken McBryde creates pre-fabricated buildings from recycled materials. Hear from homelessness crusader Norm McGillivray who repurposes spaces to create pop-up housing. And take advantage of research from technology manipulator Jenna Mikus who is finding new ways of solving old problems.
The Brisbane Open House Seminar will be administered through the Institute and will count as a formal CPD activity. Topics will be drawn from the four units of competency – design, documentation, project delivery and practice management – to allow you to apply an expanded framework to your existing practice.
The Seminar is open to all members of the BOH community and will provide an important opportunity to network. Institute member tickets will be discounted.
Three formal CPD points.
Jenna Mikus: Design For All
Jenna Mikus has a background in engineering and sustainable design, smart building technology and user behaviour. Her specialty lies in people-focused intelligent infrastructure transformations resulting in smarter environments and happier and healthier occupants.
Jenna will share how smart building technology can be used to augment the mental, social, and physical health and wellness of aging adults in their built environments and how such research can be leveraged as a mechanism to Design for All (DfA).
Professor Ken McBryde – Too Much Plastic x Not Enough Shelter
Ken McBryde is an independent consulting architect with a reputation as a “thought leader”. Ken loves exploring the boundaries of possibility. He is drawn to complex challenges that demand innovation and are driven by sustainability.
Sought after for his innovative placemaking ideas, Ken has a natural affinity with construction methodology. He is the architect for Nevhouse which creates pre-fabricated buildings from recycled materials. Nevhouse delivers light, shelter, clean water and sanitation to those who need it most.
Norm McGillivray – 15m2
Homelessness in Australia is a massive social issue with over 8,000 people sleeping rough every night. People sleep on the street, on benches, in parks and under bridges. Norm from Beddown is challenging conventional thinking to tackle and address the issue by activating and repurposing spaces that are busy by day and empty at night into pop-up accommodation. Learn how 15m2 can make a huge impact on the quality of life of our vulnerable.
