Katherine Sports Pavilion by Hames Sharley Architects takes top billing at the NT Chapter Awards

Katherine Sports Pavilion by Hames Sharley Architects takes out the top gong at the 2023 Chapter Awards.

The project was awarded the COLORBOND® Steel Award, a Public Architecture Award and the prestigious Tracy Memorial Award, during the Awards ceremony on Saturday, 24 June, at the Chung Wah Chinese Association in Darwin with over 120 architects, sponsors and guests from the built environment.

The evening was themed with red lanterns and finished with the traditional Chinese Lion Dance along with a 7-course banquet dinner by internationally renowned Chefs Jimmy Shu (Hanuman and SBS Taste of the Territory) and Danny Yuen (Roast Duck and Noodle).

The Australian Institute of Architects runs the NT Architecture Awards. An Independent jury selected all winners.  All Named Award and Chapter Award winners will now progress to the 2023 National Architecture Awards held later this year.

2023 NT Architecture Awards Winners

The Tracy Memorial Award, COLORBOND® Steel Award & Chapter Award for Public Architecture Award | Hames Sharley Architects | Katherine Sports Pavilion

Jury comments: “In awarding these Awards to the Katherine Sports Pavilion, we recognised the importance of ongoing investment in inclusive, accessible public facilities such as this in regional areas. The iconic structure creates an open, generous and welcoming public place for all. It is a legacy project that will provide positive impact to the community now and into the future”.

Named Award for Commercial Architecture (Peter Dermoudy Award) and Commendation COLORBOND® Steel Award | BVN | Larrakeyah Norforce

Jury comments: The Jury is impressed with the rigorous and robust approach to form and materials, scale modulation and proportion. Simple and low maintenance materials compliment the highly functional spatial arrangements”.

People’s Choice Award and Commendation for Interior Design | Rossi Architects | Headspace Palmerston

Jury comments: “The jury was impressed with the architects for their co-design approach, honouring youth in the process by giving them a voice and reflecting their voices through the design process. The care and passion are evident in every aspect of this project”.

Commendation for Commercial Architecture | Susan Dugdale & Associates | MacDonnell Regional Council Head Office

Jury comments: “The Jury was impacted by the design rigour and articulation that has created moments of excellence both internally and externally and providing a workplace of excellence for the Council’s ever-expanding work force”.

Other Awards presented on the evening included:

Enduring Architecture Award | Meldrum Burrows and Partners Pty Ltd | Parliament House Northern Territory

This Enduring Architecture Award is presented to a project over 25 years. Parliament House in Darwin is Australia’s newest Parliament Building. It has been the seat of the Northern Territory since 1994. It features post-modern features and was designed by architect Tim Rogers of Meldrum Burrows and Partners Pty Ltd.

The Chapter Council considers this building very worthy of the Enduring Architecture Award in 2023.

Student Award | Birgit Chan | presented for student with highest honours in Architecture and Design at Charles Darwin University

President’s Award | David Bridgman | for commitment to heritage and built environment in the Northern Territory
