Designing with Climate in Mind    

The global Climate Emergency is the greatest threat to human health. And, the building and construction industry accounts for 39% of all global carbon emissions. Architects have the power to make real positive impact through design excellence, careful material selection and the collective will to make it happen.
LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this presentation you should be able to:
  • Explain how the built environment contributes to global warming.
  • Define the terms whole life carbon, embodied carbon and operational carbon
  • List the critical issues/points with respect to materials selection and embodied carbon
  • Understand how to read an Environmental  Product Declaration and how Life Cycle Assessment tools aid reductions in embodied carbon
  • Explain carbon offsetting and how it is used to achieve net zero goals

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Aidan Mullan

Sustainability Manager, Australia and New Zealand

In response to the Global Climate Emergency Aidan Mullan specialises in the commercialisation of Interface’s Climate Take Back initiative to run its business in a way that reverses global warming.  A Chemical Engineer with Lean skills, Aidan leads innovations to reduce the environmental impacts of business processes, reduce embodied carbon and continue efficient contribution to the circular economy.  

He uses Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) tools to evaluate raw material and manufacturing environmental impacts to assist the company in transitioning to more sustainable processes and products in order to achieve its goal of becoming carbon negative by 2040. As Sustainability Manager a key part of his role is sharing the learning outcomes in achieving the Interface Mission Zero and Climate Take Back goals through workshops, lectures and mill tours.
