Media summary

The Woden Bus Depot is a major piece of civic infrastructure supporting Canberra’s expanding public transport network and its transition toward a low-emissions future. Strategically located in Phillip, the facility provides a new operational hub positioned between the Tuggeranong and Belconnen depots.

Designed by Guida Moseley Brown Architects, the depot accommodates up to 100 buses and integrates administration, maintenance and servicing within a cohesive campus. Future-proofed planning allows for the staged transition from diesel to electric buses, ensuring long-term adaptability as fleet technologies evolve.

Importantly, the project also prioritises the wellbeing of 250 Transport Canberra staff. Generous driver layover areas, recreation spaces, changerooms, breakout areas, an onsite kitchen and training facilities create a supportive, daylit and human-scaled working environment.

By elevating essential infrastructure through clarity and thoughtful design, the Woden Bus Depot reinforces the civic importance of public transport while delivering a resilient and adaptable asset for Canberra’s sustainable future.

The Woden Bus Depot is designed to accommodate Canberra’s new fleet of ninety-six Zero Emissions Battery electric buses with capacity to charge all these buses overnight under cover. This is an essential facility to support Transport Canberra in the transition of the public bus service to electric buses, and part of the ACT Government’s leadership in sustainable living and reduction of environmental emissions in the city. The completed complex is an impressive presence along Athllon Drive and we are receiving praise from all those now moving in to occupy and operate the electric buses in a new work environment.
