The West Coast Education Support Centre’s vision of “Caring, Achieving, Together,” is embodied in the responsive and inclusive West Coast Changerooms design. Purpose-built for years 7 to 12 students with special education needs, this addition to the pool’s facilities provides an essential piece of enabling infrastructure. Its conception maintains that access to everyday school facilities, such as changing for swimming, should be safe, empowering, and accessible to all. Sited between the existing pool and play courts, the pavilion-like changerooms responds to its surrounding low-scale context.
Inspired by robust coastal change rooms, the building is naturally ventilated and lit through skylights. A perforated screen façade and glass roof lights support natural ventilation and daylight. The facility exceeds minimum accessibility standards, including assisted-access toilets with ceiling-mounted hoists, an adult change table, clear wayfinding, and flexible storage. The project reinforces inclusive values within the school community and normalises access.
