The Gadubanud people
Victoria
“Werrin” (Gadubanud meaning “Beautiful View”) is a long-term family project in the hinterland of Lorne Victoria.
On 10 hectares of land in a rural conservation zone adjacent to the town of Lorne Werrin seeks to develop a coastal edge residence that explores what the site has to offer and create a legacy for future generations of the family to use appreciate the natural setting and a non-urban reading of living. It is conceived as a collection of buildings that can be switched on or off to accommodate a few or many. As four shed forms and associated courtyards along with extensive terraces the project embraces venacuclar forms and natural materials to create an experience of calm and restoration.Werrin is now a multigenerational coastal home, nurturing and restorative as well as provoking what building on our coastal edge can be like avoiding the heroics of the archetypal suburb to coast iterations.
The dream began to design a house – a retreat – for us humans – a wildlife retreat,a nature space to restore, to be, for an ever expanding family’.
Choice of materials, natural
Timber, concrete, brass, marble
A shady space to enjoy inside and let the light be outside. A cave at times.Cool in summer, cosy in winter.
16 of us but not a big house. Not a hotel. We want to be together and we want our privacy, need our space.
Creative spaces. Children and lawn. Swings. Remembering our childhood and sharing it with the next ones.
It’s exceeded our wildest dreams.Client perspective
