Media summary

This project is a sensitive alteration and addition to a late 1950s, early 1960s red brick bungalow on a sloping battle-axe site in Middle Cove on Sydney’s Lower North Shore. Designed for a growing family of five, the project is grounded in a philosophy of retention and adaptation, extending the life of the existing home while reinterpreting its mid-century character for contemporary living.

Rather than demolish, the design works with the original house, introducing a modest weatherboard addition and a new lower level tucked beneath the existing structure. New elements, including a stone chimney and curved white aluminium fascia, reference mid-century architectural language and provide a clear link between old and new.

Living spaces are oriented to capture leafy outlooks and support indoor–outdoor living suited to Sydney’s climate. The result is a calm, functional family home that balances restraint, material warmth and moments of architectural delight.

The renovation has genuinely transformed the way we live through everyday moments. We wake to soft natural light, views to the jacaranda and surrounding bush, and the house immediately feels calm. Spaces flow easily indoors and out, supporting busy family life as well as slow afternoons by the pool. Two distinct outdoor areas offer a choice between open valley views and a more sheltered, private retreat. Despite being surrounded by neighbours, the house feels completely ours. The new lower level has changed how we host, allowing visiting family and friends to settle in and feel at home.
