Taking on a narrow west-facing site, Maylands Residence is an addition that pivots off grid, drawing in northern light and pressing away from the boundary to embrace the landscape. Fronted by an 1890s stone frontage cottage with later art deco features, the transformation starts with unstitching a patchwork of additions to restore its presence to the street and amplify the dialogue between old and new.Â
The new addition continues along the original spine then contorts itself towards the sun, now embracing deeper diagonal views into the landscape – whilst seamlessly connecting to the original cottage with flooring flowing all the way through to the garden decking.Â
Employing joinery in lieu of walls to organise the public and private realms, the crafted piece stretches out as both a feature and function of the space, with double-sided storage holding the kitchen, dining, and lounge. This intervention unlocks greatly improved amenity with minimum footprint.Â
Our brief was to restore the historical appeal of our very run-down bluestone cottage, and to provide an interesting, modern addition. The team have exceeded our expectations on all levels. The project has successfully incorporated contemporary design and our lifestyle into the character of the house. The spaces are flexible, allowing for entertaining and guest accommodation. The kitchen, laundry and bathrooms are aesthetically pleasing, providing an excellent user experience. The north facing family room makes great use of natural light and the garden outlook. The interior finishes are beautiful, with emphasis on natural materials and colour to provide individuality.Â
