The New Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre at Randwick reimagines paediatric healthcare as a place of healing, discovery and connection. Designed by Billard Leece Partnership for the NSW Government, the project integrates world-class clinical care, research and education within a highly human-centred environment that puts children and families first.
Single-patient rooms, generous family spaces and intuitive wayfinding support dignity, comfort and wellbeing, while biophilic design brings natural light, landscape and views deep into the building. In an Australian-first, the co-location of research laboratories with clinical spaces enables a seamless ‘bench-to-bedside’ model, accelerating translation from research to treatment.
Anchored within the Randwick Health & Innovation Precinct, the building strengthens campus connectivity through a permeable ground plane, public plaza and bridge links to adjacent facilities. Shaped by its coastal context and informed by extensive consultation, the project demonstrates how architecture can actively support better health outcomes.
“Our new 12 storey hospital building reflects the voices of hundreds of families and staff who helped shape its design. Its vibrant, welcoming spaces bring clinical and non-clinical areas together, strengthening how we care for children and young people from across NSW. Purpose built family areas – places to play, rest, cook a meal or take a quiet moment to reset – support parents and carers through their most challenging moments. The building’s thoughtful layout enhances clinical flow, improves collaboration and creates a calmer, more intuitive experience. We are grateful to BLP Architects for delivering a building that truly serves our community.”
