Western Australia
Maali Kaadadjiny Centre was designed to address the needs of Swan View SHS and the broader community for a dedicated Aboriginal Education Centre to house the hugely successful Aboriginal focused Academies. MODE Design was engaged to deliver a facility that improves the experiences of those that engage with it, whilst providing the necessary amenities of the major academy programs the school offers.
The use of colour played an important role in the aesthetics and references the colours of the Aboriginal flag and the unique Western Australian sunset. A red brick base wraps around a form that is topped with lightweight cladding with a feature black brick element marking the entry. Prefinished FC sheets of fading orange tones are layered in a way to emulate a sunset. This contributes to a form that appears to be emerging from the adjacent building, reflecting the developing knowledge and guidance shining through.
School Principal, George Sekulla, vision for the project is that this could be a landmark facility, not only to address the needs of Swan View SHS, but also one that could become the potential driver for the implementation of more of these types of education centres across the State.
