Media summary

The realisation of the new Library Auditorium and Photography Gallery as well as the refurbishment of the 1980’s Macquarie Street Building, have significantly strengthened the State Library of NSW’s position as a leading cultural institution. The redesigned Bashir Reading Room, increased study spaces and upgraded technology have created a more welcoming, efficient environment for research and learning. Improvements to the entry experience, wayfinding, and visitor support have streamlined access, while the expanded bookshop and cafĂ© encourage people to stay and engage. Since reopening, these enhancements have  seen increased numbers of visitors choosing the Library as a place to study, explore and connect.

The project was desgined by Andrew Andersons and Cullen Feng Architects. Andrew was also the orignal designer of the Macquarie Building while at the NSW Government Architect, opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1988.
