Arrernte Country
Northern Territory
Located on Arrernte Country in Alice Springs, the Discovery Centre transforms a previously overlooked corner of St Philip’s College into a vibrant hub for learning, creativity, and collaboration. Expansive glazing, generous overhangs, and outdoor classrooms connect students with the environment and campus life.
Flexible learning zones, including tech labs, ‘dirty learning’ areas, and mobile furniture, support diverse teaching approaches while fostering curiosity, collaboration, and student autonomy. Transparency and visual connectivity encourage spontaneous interaction and peer learning.
Cultural identity and community are central. Indigenous naming, material choices, and the central yarning circle create spaces for dialogue, reflection, and cultural exchange. Materials and siting respond to the red centre landscape, integrating the campus’s Sustainability Centre, kitchen garden, and surrounding escarpment.
Sustainability strategies such as passive shading, natural ventilation, high-performance glazing, photovoltaics, and stormwater harvesting ensure energy efficiency and provide living tools for environmental learning.
