South Tce Terrace revives an early 1900s six meter wide terrace. The original front of the house is retained, maintaining its place in the historical streetscape whilst discretely evolving at the rear. Working within the exisiting footprint, the design places equal value on outdoor spaces, whilst significantly improving natural light, ventilation and spacial clarity.
Selectively removed layers of previous finishes and additions revealed texturally rich limestone and brick walls, now forming a central anchor in the new space. The works weave around and through the retained elements, organising the kitchen, laundry and stair to the new first floor bedroom, into a compact core. The new work was carefully formed to embrace the owners vision for the space and lifestyle whilst being considerate of overshadowing and privacy between neighbours.
South Tce Terrace shows how interventions within a historic terrace balance retention, reuse and enhance modern family living.
There are so many things that give us joy about our Fremantle terrace, incorporating everything we need for inner city living.
From the integration of old and new, re-purpose of floorboards, reimagining of original limestone walls, converting windows and doorways into functional spaces, not having to turn a light on in any room during the day, beautiful capture of sea breezes in all rooms, sunlit indoor shower overlooking Freo roofs, a kitchen that works perfectly and extends seamlessly into the outdoor entertaining space, and the garage straight into the lane and 50m walk to everything we need.
We love it.
