Located in Bondi, Sydney, MHNDU’s O’Donnell Street project is the crafting of two boutique homes on the one site. Influenced by the coastal and cultural context of the surrounding area, both residences are open to natural light and ocean breeze, while still providing ample residential privacy. The design divides the two dwellings through an axis of symmetry running down the centre of the site, while the open plan ground floor draws light from three sides and invites cooling ocean air and sounds to flow through the space. The use of materials such as brick and Victorian ash are used to balance the colour and solidity of the interior, whilst the external palette evokes the coastal location, contrasting off-white Austral Chillingham brickwork with black stained Abodo timber. The upper floor cladding allows for the integration of beholding screens, adding kinetic movement to the facade.
