Located in the heart of New Farm, this project reimagines a pre-1946 cottage for contemporary family living through careful layering of the old and new. A contemporary extension below and to the rear preserves the home’s heritage character while introducing a refined modern sophistication. The double-height living space forms the heart of the home, celebrating light and spatial generosity. An elevated garden featuring hanging planters and a sculptural ceramic screen filters the light to create an ever-changing pattern of shade throughout the day. Natural timbers are paired with polished concrete to balance warmth and durability, anchored by a sculptural staircase which defines the interior. Ultimately, the project responds to the client’s brief by creating a home which is generous, resilient, and deeply connected to place. A contemporary family residence which proudly honors its past while embracing an elevated subtropical way of living.
Our home gives our family a sense of calm the moment we walk through the door. The generous living spaces flow effortlessly to the outdoors, inviting natural light and breezes throughout the day. The openness of the design makes everyday life feel relaxed and uncluttered, while the materials and forms are contemporary yet enduring, ensuring our home will not date. It is the perfect design for a family with three teenagers – functional and private but also allows us to come together and enjoy special moments and occasions. We feel like we are on a holiday every day we wake up!
