Media summary

The newly completed Mark Taylor Oval Pavilion at Waitara Park respectfully reimagines a historic sporting venue for a new generation. Rather than demolish the 1929 grandstand, the project retains and restores the original structure, introducing a complementary 'contemporary twin' pavilion alongside it.

The new building delivers accessible facilities, public amenities, a kiosk, umpires’ rooms and a generous first-floor club and community space overlooking the field. Designed to enhance permeability and activation of the park, the pavilion minimises its ground footprint while creating sheltered edges that engage with the surrounding public realm.

The retention of the heritage grandstand significantly reduced embodied carbon, allowing investment to focus on inclusive, future-ready facilities that support increased participation in sport, particularly for women and girls.

Together, the heritage and contemporary elements form a cohesive civic presence, strengthening Waitara Park as a vibrant, accessible and sustainable community destination.

The new Mark Taylor Oval Pavilion marks an important milestone for Northern District Cricket Club and Hornsby Shire. Archer Office retained the original 1929 grandstand and developed a design for a new pavilion that respectfully complements it.

The new facilities have significantly improved the quality and inclusiveness of our home ground. The club room is set to become a focal point for matches and club events, strengthening our connection to the wider community. While the existing grandstand served our club well over the past 100 years, the new Mark Taylor Oval Pavilion sets the stage for the century to come!
