The Lismore Municipal Building, a free classical landmark built in 1928, has been carefully restored following the devastating 2022 floods. The building sustained significant damage but was recognised for its enduring civic and cultural importance. With $6.1 million in funding from all levels of government under the $74 million Community Resilience Centre program, Bennett Constructions engaged BKA Architecture to lead the design and documentation of its remediation.
The restoration balanced heritage preservation with modern resilience. Flood-prone linings were removed to reveal original brickwork and beams, complemented by heritage-appropriate lighting. Mechanical and electrical systems were relocated above flood levels, while accessibility and amenity upgrades: including new toilets, kitchens, and a replaced lift ensure ongoing public use for civic and community events.
Now complete, the Lismore Municipal Building stands as both a symbol of resilience and a renewed civic asset, preserving history while preparing for the future.
