Laneway in HiFi is a lifestyle in contrast of restraint and rebellion. A home of measured sensibility and organisation. Beneath the order hums the energy of its owners: a family whose love for punk rock, high-fidelity sound, and fine wine brings an underlying confidence in paving their own path.
Activating the laneway transforms the typical ‘back of house’ into both a new entrance and a hub for social engagement. There is a quiet defiance in the refusal to conform to the expected, yet a consideration in responding to context deliberately. Like the punk rock movement itself, the design strips back excess, concentrating on what matters: connection, authenticity, expression and the belief that the greatest potential of a space is often found within the overlooked spaces.
Laneway in HiFi doesn’t just occupy its site—it challenges its precedents and the existing with both consideration and spirited rebellion.
Laneway in HI-FI offers a bold and inventive response to a unique corner site, extending the home’s presence into the laneway to activate the street and foster community interaction. Clever, compact planning maximises outdoor space and orients living areas appropriately, while sectional shifts work to create a light filled interior. A rich material palette and functional layout meet the client’s needs, and a playful, expressive form invites conversation, instilling new life into the neighbourhood and enhancing its established context.
The key components of our brief to the RADS team were to design a light-filled and energy-efficient space with a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors – a space that also celebrates music and the joy it brings to our family life. RADS delivered on all fronts. Natural light is in abundance thanks to north facing windows, with heating or cooling only required in the most extreme of conditions. Our backyard is truly an extension of our living area and our home is filled with music each and every day. We couldn’t be happier with the finished product and its functionality.
