Media summary

Housing Choices Preston is a transformative development delivering 39 accesible, sustainable and affordable homes while preserving essential public parking spaces and significant native trees. Located near Preston Market, the library, and public transport, this LGBTQIA+-focused project prioritises inclusivity and liveability.

A collaboration between Housing Choices Australia, Homes Victoria, the City of Darebin, and the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation, the project forms part of the Victorian Government’s $5.3 billion Big Housing Build.

The five-storey building features one- and two-bedroom apartments designed to Liveable Housing Australia Silver Level standards, achieving 5 Star Green Star and 7 Star NatHERS ratings.

The Six Degrees design integrates natural light, round windows, generous balconies, an inviting roof terrace, and a pocket park with mature native trees and communal spaces. These features create a vibrant, safe, and energy-efficient living environment that enriches the diverse residents’ experience and the surrounding neighbourhood, addressing Melbourne’s urgent need for affordable housing.

After years in unaffordable private housing, Ivan—a queer singer, drag performer, and HCA resident—has found a home in a welcoming queer community with like-minded people.

“You have lots of people, from trans to gays to lesbians. There’s a common thread where we can all meet up.” Ivan has decorated his one-bedroom apartment, filling it with colourful artworks and greenery. “I’ve made it my own and I’ve put my personality into it.”

Now, he actively advocates for the benefits of his home and community—thoughtfully designed by Six Degrees to foster safety and connection among residents.
