Media summary

This bespoke project is a renovation of a classic Double Bay semi and was designed for a small, grown family. Fundamentally the house is a series of boxes. The main house is articulated by the existing street frontage mass, a central light well which all spaces benefit from, and an extension beyond that. The courtyard garden serves as the negative space between the main house, and the rear studio box. Internal spaces were crafted in an experimental and playful way, with circulation zones in particular providing varied spatial experiences. Particular attention has been paid to detailing throughout the home. Architecturally the design ensures access to natural light and air while balancing privacy concerns in a dense village fringe context. Expressed steel structure bookends each of the box additions. At night these read really beautifully as separate lit boxes in the streetscape.
