The adaptive reuse of a former furniture factory in Summer Hill, The habilis project exemplifies the role of architecture in addressing urgent social issues through thoughtful design. By transforming an underutilized industrial site into a place of dignity and security, the project embodies a transformative approach to social housing, designed to provide secure, long- term accommodation for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness and mental illness.
Habilis 1 exceeded expectations in both functionality and design quality. The architects successfully transformed a complex former industrial site into a highly livable residential environment. Although compact in footprint, the apartments feel spacious due to high ceilings and full-height north-facing windows. Mezzanine bedrooms efficiently achieve required floor areas, while excellent acoustic treatment ensures privacy and comfort. Attractive landscaped gardens and welcoming communal spaces enhance amenity. A discreetly integrated secure perimeter provides safety without compromising aesthetics. Residents consistently express satisfaction, and visitors from the housing and health sectors have offered overwhelmingly positive feedback on the completed development.
